Senator supports Biden’s immigration plans, calls for protections for essential workers

Last week, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris met with several Democratic leaders to discuss comprehensive immigration reform, the budget reconciliation bill and a path to citizenship for undocumented essential workers.

The Chair of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee, Senator Alex Padilla, issued a statement following the meeting with President Biden and stated that Democratic leaders are quite hopeful about moving towards comprehensive immigration reform through the reconciliation process.

Broadly speaking, the reconciliation process would allow the Biden administration to include immigration legislation in a budget package, which could be passed by the Senate (the upper Chamber of Congress) without the need to obtain 60 votes, but only 51.

Regarding this option, Padilla openly stated that “This is a critical moment for the future of immigration reform. The upcoming budget reconciliation process provides us with the best opportunity we’ve had in years to take action”.

Adding to that, Padilla emphasized the importance of supporting immigration reform, even through the reconciliation process, especially considering that the US is trying to recover from the economic crisis brought on by the global Coronavirus pandemic and, therefore, it is important to protect essential workers across the nation, including undocumented immigrants, who serve in all kinds of local market sectors and keep the country’s economy afloat.

The Biden administration moves forward on immigration despite controversy

It is no secret that the current border situation represents a gigantic challenge for the current administration of the US and even a risk to Biden’s immigration plans. By this, we refer to a surge of illegal border crossings that has taken place since the end of 2020, but which increased substantially since the beginning of 2021, when President Biden took office.

However, despite the social controversy it is facing, the Biden administration still continues to pursue the ideal of restructuring the entire immigration system through multiple strategies, which include, but are not limited to:

  • Removing, lifting or rescinding policies and restrictions implemented by the Trump administration on all kinds of immigration processes.
  • Reshaping the political asylum process and other humanitarian programs.
  • Enforcing immigration law in the border territory through humane and fair policies.
  • Promoting comprehensive immigration reform in Congress.
  • Expanding the alternatives available to foreign workers, including undocumented farm workers, highly qualified foreigners, workers who are essential to the US health care system or food supply chain, inter alia.

In other words, the Biden administration is moving forward on the immigration system despite the social debate related to the current border situation.
