Research reveals role of international students in important sectors

Research conducted by NFAP (National Foundation for American Policy) in August 2021 analyzes the role of international students in science and engineering.

The research reveals official data and figures from recent years regarding the enrollment of international students in high-quality academic programs, as well as their role and contribution in sectors important to the US’ competitiveness.

Let’s take a look at some of the most important findings:

Engineering

Regarding the electrical engineering sector, the research reveals that:

  • In 2019, there were 26,343 full-time international graduate students, a fairly high number compared to American graduate students in this area, who were only 9,083.
  • Between 2015 and 2019, the international student enrollment rate in graduate-level academic programs related to electrical engineering decreased by 19.5%.
  • Foreign nationals accounted for 82% of graduate students in petroleum engineering programs, 74% in electrical engineering programs, 61% in civil engineering programs, and 54% in chemical engineering programs.

Information sciences

Regarding the information science sector, the research reveals that:

  • In 2019, there were 44,786 full-time international graduate students, a fairly high number compared to American graduate students in this area, who were only 17,334.
  • Between 2016 and 2019, the rate of international student enrollment in graduate-level academic programs related to information and computer science decreased by 9.5%.
  • Foreign nationals account for 72% of graduate students in information and computer science programs, 56% in mathematics programs, 52% in material science programs, and 50% in pharmaceutical science programs.

Research conclusion

One of the main focuses of the research is the impact of visa restrictions for international students and highly skilled foreign workers, including those related to the global Coronavirus pandemic.

Therefore, as a major conclusion, NFAP states, “International students play an essential role preserving America’s position as a center of scientific and technological innovation. For international students to continue playing that role, it is necessary for the United States to maintain reasonable visa policies for international students and to make it easier for students to work after graduation.”

Adding to that, it is important to explain that the research is also related to the role of international students on national economic behavior. In fact, the reality is that low foreign enrollment not only affects the US’ education sector, but it also becomes an obstacle to the country’s socioeconomic advancement in the long run.

This is because, if American universities only accept local students in science, engineering and technology academic programs, they would not be able to meet market demands in comparison to the size of the national economic system.
