Refugee Group Asks Biden to Fulfill His Immigration Promises

Refugee group urges Biden to remove Trump’s immigration policies

A Haitian refugee group based in New York is calling on the Biden administration to deliver on its promises and revoke Trump’s immigration policies, which have tremendously affected beneficiaries of Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

To understand the issue at hand, it is important to clarify that TPS is an immigration program that offers protection against deportation to immigrants from countries that are experiencing ongoing armed conflicts, civil wars, epidemics, natural disasters, inter alia. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is the entity in charge of choosing TPS beneficiary countries and determining how long their citizens will receive protection in the US.

However, the Donald Trump administration has focused heavily on reducing benefits offered to immigrants currently residing in the country and has fought to win the legal battle in local courts and get approval to remove TPS.

Therefore, since Joe Biden (Democratic political party) won the presidential elections, the refugee group asks him to rescind Trump’s “racist policies”, which, in their opinion, endanger the future of thousands of innocent people and violate the US’ Constitution.

What refugees ask for

The refugee group plans to pressure the new administration, once Biden takes office in January 2021, to fulfill its immigration promises and guarantee protection to the most vulnerable immigrant communities.

In fact, the group states: “Joe Biden and Kamala Harris campaigned on a promise that, in the first 100 days of the Biden-Harris administration, they would reverse Trump’s discriminatory policies on immigration, including protecting TPS holders and DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients, ending family separation and restoring asylum laws.”

Adding to that, they ask the Biden government to grant permanent legal residence to 400,000 TPS recipients and dignified conditions for immigrants currently residing in the US.

This is not the only group that is asking the Biden administration to fulfill its immigration promises. In fact, dozens of citizens, activists, humanitarian organizations, immigrant rights advocates and immigration attorneys state that the American population chose this administration trusting that Biden will fulfill his proposals to improve the immigration system and revoke Trump’s policies, which have worsened the humanitarian crisis at the borders and separated hundreds of immigrant families.
