Protests in Front of Detention Centers Continue

Immigrant advocates ask to revoke deportation order

Immigrant advocates raise their voices

Immigrant rights advocates have very strong ideals. Many times they have put their health at risk and prefer to continue the fight for justice and for decent living conditions for immigrant communities.

Despite the imminent threat generated by the global Coronavirus pandemic, activists around the US have protested in front of immigration detention centers asking the government for help:

  • To stop deportations temporarily while the threat to public health diminishes.
  • For the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) to free immigrants who pose no threat to society, at least temporarily.
  • For the government to provide more medical supplies to health personnel working in ICE facilities.
  • To offer better working conditions and protection for ICE employees and their families.

The protests and the arrival of the Coronavirus pandemic

When the Coronavirus arrived in the US, immigrant rights advocates decided to hold protests in car caravans in front of detention centers.

They also attempted to donate protective masks, gloves and hand sanitizer on several occasions but senior ICE officials said the donations could not be received unless they went through a thorough review.

Now that the massive outbreak of Coronavirus has slowed considerably, immigrant rights advocates are conducting in-person protests in front of ICE detention centers.

The most recent protest

Last Monday, June 8, 2020, activists gathered in front of the offices of Camarillo, one of the ICE facilities, in Ventura County (California).

They are asking to revoke an immigrant’s deportation order (from Mexico, 48 years old), who has played an essential role in the battle against the Coronavirus pandemic.

She faithfully served in a center that cared for and protected homeless people during the massive COVID-19 outbreak in the US.

Immigrant rights advocates declare that this is just one of hundreds of deportation cases that could greatly affect the country.

On top of that, the immigrant they are fighting for has been paying taxes for years and has three children who are legal citizens and therefore should have the right to obtain permanent legal residence under the US Constitution.

After the protest ended, activists walked around the streets surrounding ICE’s office, showing their posters and calling for the decision to be reversed.
