North American Triangle closes land borders until January 2021

North American land borders closed since the first massive outbreak of COVID-19

The governments of the US, Canada and Mexico constantly try to create strategies and help each other to mitigate the impact of the global Coronavirus pandemic, which arrived suddenly and its outbreak was massive in the North American territory.

Nowadays, after more than 11 months since the first cases arrived in North America, the US is still the main epicenter of the pandemic. In fact, the number of deaths grew exponentially in a matter of weeks and official figures remain alarming.

Therefore, North American countries have implemented similar emergency measures to take care of the local population, protect the economic system through commercial exchanges and prevent another massive outbreak of Coronavirus.

Governments of these three countries decided to close land borders since March 2020, allowing only transport that involves any kind of commercial exchange and restricting non-essential travel, including tourism or family reunification trips.

The last time that governments of the US, Canada and Mexico extended the closure of land borders was in November 2020, when they stated that this preventive measure would run until December, with the possibility of extension.

Since the health emergency is still present and threatens the health of local citizens, in mid-December 2020, the US, Canada and Mexico extended the closure of land borders to prevent another massive spread of Coronavirus.

On this occasion, the emergency measure will be active until January 21, 2021, one day after the president-elect of the US, Joe Biden (belonging to the Democratic political party), takes office.

Regarding the closure of the North American borders, the current Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Chad Wolf, stated: “We are working closely with Mexico & Canada to keep essential trade & travel open while also protecting our citizens from the virus (…) As this administration (Trump’s) continues to make great progress on a vaccine for COVID, we will reevaluate non-essential travel restrictions again early in the new year.”
