Non-Essential Travel Restriction could be Extended Again

Trump's government might extend travel restrictions again

The US closed its borders with Canada and Mexico

The massive outbreak of the Coronavirus created unprecedented chaos and countries around the world had to take strict measures to counter the impact of the pandemic.

For instance, Trump’s government decided to close the borders and suspend non-essential travel from Canada and Mexico.

The only interaction currently allowed between these three countries is trade travel.

In this way, North American governments protect the local population by preventing the import and export of the virus.

This measure has several restrictions:

  • Non-commercial vehicular traffic between borders is not currently allowed.
  • Immigrants coming from Canada and Mexico cannot enter the US.
  • Asylum and refuge requests are temporarily suspended.

When was this measure announced?

The current administration of the US announced the suspension of non-essential travel in late March, 2020, when the North American territory felt the impact of the health crisis for the first time.

Initially, this measure was scheduled until mid-April. However, due to the alarming number of people infected with COVID-19 in the US, Trump’s government decided to extend the measure until May 21, 2020.

This measure could be extended again

Despite the fact that the US closed its borders more than two months ago, this measure might be extended again.

According to Chad Wolf, the Secretary of Homeland Security of the US, Trump’s government is analyzing the possibility of extending the restriction on non-essential travel from Mexico and Canada.

He specifically stated:“those restrictions expire on May 21. We will probably consider expanding those restrictions, as the country continues to be on a gradual open, state-by-state, governor-by-governor basis, so we are taking a look at that as well”.

The current government ensures that this measure helps to mitigate the impact of the virus for several reasons:

  • Prevents a second wave of infection in the US.
  • Protects the local population.
  • Prevents saturation of the healthcare system.
  • Safeguards essential resources for legal citizens.

The government has not made any official statement yet

The Trump administration has not declared a decision regarding the extension of this measure and the deadline expires on May 21, 2020.
