USCIS announces new virtual methodologies for veterans and military members

Due to the health crisis caused by the Coronavirus, the offices of the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) remain closed until June 4, 2020, at least.

In this way, the government ensures the protection of USCIS employees and prevents further massive spread of the virus.

It means that in-person appointments, naturalization ceremonies, and biometric data updates are not currently active is USCIS facilities.

This has generated a lot of distress among the immigrant community that yearns to live in the US and obtain a permanent residence permit.

Two of the immigration sectors most affected by the current crisis are:

  • The immigrant community serving military personnel.
  • The veteran immigrant community.

Most of them are ready to submit the naturalization application, however, USCIS had suspended these services during the COVID-19 outbreak.

They have made several requests in recent weeks asking the government for help to process their naturalization in the US.

The current government granted their petitions.

USCIS offers a solution for these communities

An official report released on Wednesday, May 6, 2020 states: “USCIS has always been committed to supporting the immigration needs of those who currently serve or previously served the United States in the armed forces. Citizenship is the one of the distinct privileges our nation bestows and we are proud to naturalize those who put their lives on the line for our country.”

Therefore, USCIS opened an option for veterans and immigrants from military personnel to submit the naturalization application virtually.

How does the process work?

The form that they must complete is the N-400.

This is the form for military members or veterans who previously served in the military to apply for naturalization.

They must meet certain requirements according to the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

However, they have several benefits and are exempt from some requirements that would normally be asked to anyone applying for permanent residence:

  • They do not pay the mandatory fee to submit the application.
  • They have more benefits for their relatives (in case they want to come to the US or already live here).
  • If they already had biometric data saved in the USCIS system, it will be used again for the naturalization application.
  • Their requests are resolved more quickly.
