Documented Dreamers – Who are they?

One of the most well-known and largest immigrant communities in the US are the so-called Dreamers, who are young immigrants who were brought to the country without legal documentation when they were minors.

There is another similar community known as Documented Dreamers, which refers to young immigrants who have resided legally in the US under the sponsorship of their parents, who usually hold employment-based visas and have lived in the country for a considerable period of time.

However, when Documented Dreamers turn 21, their parents’ visas no longer protect them and they become subject to deportation if they do not pursue other immigration alternatives to apply for legal documentation.

Usually, Documented Dreamers, with the help of their parents, begin the process to become Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) before they reach the age of majority. However, due to an alarming backlog of immigration cases nationwide and long waiting times (sometimes decades), they often do not receive a response to their applications before they turn 21.

What is the Senators’ proposal for Documented Dreamers?

The “America’s Children Act” proposes to open a path to citizenship for Documented Dreamers, who unfortunately must face deportation proceedings as they are not dependent on their parents after the age of 21.

The Senators openly state that the vast majority of Documented Dreamers have lived in the US for several years through the sponsorship of their parents’ long-term visas and, as such, have been an active part of the American social fabric and are likely to become highly competent workers.

In fact, Senator Padilla argues, “We cannot turn our backs on the ‘Documented Dreamers’ who have spent most of their lives in this country, contributing to their communities and our economy (…) These young people deserve the opportunity to pursue their American dream and continue building lives in the country they call home.”

Adding to that, the Senators state that opening a path to citizenship for Documented Dreamers would be a great alternative to boost the economy and protect the retirement age population for decades to come.
