Misconceptions About Immigration are Related to Lack of Information

Following reliable sources can change the population's views on immigration

Where do misconceptions about immigration come from?

In one of our most recent articles, we talk about the results of a poll conducted by Gallup, which shows that 42% of the American population still links immigration to crime.

Immigration has always been an important part of the US’ history and yet, it has always been embroiled in gigantic public controversy. This is mainly due to the social division generated by the policies and ideals of immigration.

On the one hand, there is a part of the population that supports legal immigration and argues that it is beneficial for the local market. They propose expanding benefits for immigrants, offering international protection to families who need it most, and allowing immigrants to build a future in the US.

On the other hand, there is a part of the population that disagrees with immigration, both legal and illegal. They support the idea of reducing immigration at all costs and safeguarding essential resources only for the American population.

In addition to that, it is important to remember that the current administration of the US, led by President Donald Trump, has always referred to immigration with a negative connotation.

This has created another chapter in the history of the US because there is a growing division between opinions about the country’s immigration policies.

Could misconceptions come from lack of information?

A recent study conducted by the Open Science Framework, creates a relationship between the sources of information and the concepts of the population regarding immigration.

The main ideal of the study was to test whether citizens can change their views on immigration after receiving information from reliable sources, with specific data about the real impact of immigration in the most important sectors of the US.

The main findings are:

  • When the local population analyzes the real data on the impact of immigration, they tend to change their opinion and adopt more positive points of view.
  • The study was conducted in several countries and showed that people who have one or more reliable sources of information are more difficult to change their opinion regarding immigration.
  • The population tends to believe more in negative ideas about immigration, than in positive ones.
  • Most of the respondents agree with legal immigration, but do not agree with illegal immigration.

In addition to that, the study shows that the population that is not up to date with current immigration policies tends to have more radical opinions. Whereas people who have a solid knowledge base tend to propose inclusive and multicultural ideas.
