Michigan Suffers Work Visa Restrictions

Michigan reports workforce shortage due to visa restrictions

Current restrictions in the immigration sector

It is well known that the global Coronavirus pandemic suddenly arrived on North American territory and the number of people infected, particularly in the US, grew exponentially.

That is why the current government, led by President Donald Trump, was forced to implement emergency measures to counteract the impact of the pandemic in most sectors of our society.

Multiple emergency measures affect the immigration sector of the US, which has sparked a series of controversies. In fact, some government decisions have reached the Supreme Court of Justice due to the polemic they have generated, especially among communities of activists and immigrant rights advocates.

On the one hand, the Trump administration has always been focused on reducing legal immigration and increasing regulations to eradicate illegal immigration.

On the other hand, the global pandemic of COVID-19 contributed substantially so that the Trump administration could implement emergency measures in the immigration sector.

For instance, one of the recent government decisions was to suspend the issuance of work visas and increase restrictions so that local or US-based companies hire only qualified American and non-foreign workers.

The US is known for hosting thousands of foreign workers annually and, in fact, many critics argue that the country’s business and technological success depends largely on foreign workforce.

Michigan reports workforce shortage

The president assures that the restrictions on work visas protect American workers and help reduce the current unemployment rate. However, despite the apparent intention of the government to help the local population, several states have reported a shortage of skilled workforce and the difficulty of supplying market demand.

That is the case of Michigan, which benefits greatly from work visas and the quality of work offered by skilled foreigners who bring entrepreneurship and innovation to the US.

In fact, a recent study shows that during fiscal year 2019 (October-September), Michigan hired about 4,350 skilled foreign workers through the H-1B work visas.

Apart from that, the inclusion of foreign workers has also contributed to the socio-economic development of different areas of the market and the creation of small and medium-sized companies that offer jobs and salaries for the local population.

Michigan also ensures that most sectors affected by the economic crisis and the unemployment rate are not related to the sectors that benefit from qualified foreign workforce such as science, technology, computing, research, inter alia.

It means that, according to the official report, the government decision to restrict the issuance of work visas until 2021 is affecting market sectors essential for international competitiveness and for the country’s development.
