Mexico’s Government Supports Strict Immigration Policies

Mexican President approves restrictive immigration policies

The borders between the US and Mexico

Annually, the US is the destination for thousands of immigrants. Dozens of people arrive at authorized ports of entry located on the US-Mexican borders to apply for legal entry permits, most of them through humanitarian alternatives such as political asylum. Also, there are immigrants who try to cross the borders without prior authorization and then request legal documentation within the US.

This happens mainly because, on the one hand, the Central American territory does not always have local resources to offer citizens economic stability, social benefits, government guarantees, public safety, high quality of life, inter alia. On the other hand, the immigration system of the US, being a first world country, is quite broad and offers multiple alternatives for the most vulnerable immigrant communities.

However, the situation on Mexico’s borders has changed considerably during the term of President Donald Trump.

This is mainly because his government:

  • Implemented the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP) or “Remain in Mexico” in 2019, which does not allow asylum seekers to enter the US while they await responses to their immigration applications.
As a result, hundreds of asylum seekers live in temporary shelters in Mexico, where they have little access to basic services and survive thanks to donations from humanitarian organizations or neighboring communities.
  • Changed immigration enforcement, both at the borders and within the US. Thus, mass deportations are normal during his term, sending hundreds of undocumented immigrants back to Mexico.
  • Increased restrictions and requirements for multiple migratory processes. Therefore, the backlog of immigration cases increases waiting times for foreigners, worsening the situation at the borders.

Mexican President approves restrictive immigration policies

On Thursday, December 17, 2020, the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also known as AMLO, defended, approved and supported strict and restrictive immigration policies in the Mexican territory.

He stated that, thanks to policies recently implemented in Mexico, his government has been able to detain undocumented immigrants before they reach the US’ borders, improving the migratory situation and avoiding a humanitarian crisis; a premise that has been contradicted on multiple occasions.

Among strategies to curb illegal immigration, like the US, Mexico has increased border protection in the south of the country, where it borders Guatemala, which has prevented massive immigration to North American territory.

Speaking specifically about policies like MPP or mass deportations, AMLO stated that he will wait until President-elect Joe Biden takes office to establish new agreements, always protecting the well-being of the most vulnerable immigrant communities.
