Mexican President Supports Immigration Reform

AMLO to call lawmakers who vote against immigration reform

On Tuesday, November 16, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, also known as AMLO, openly stated that he personally plans to call lawmakers who vote against Biden’s immigration reform through the spending bill.

AMLO explained that passing immigration reform is the right thing to do in times of global crisis and that the US Congress should unite to support Biden’s proposal.

In fact, AMLO stated, “If legislators from one party block this initiative, we will call them out at a later time in a respectful manner. We will make it known from here that legislators from one party did not help something that is just and humanitarian”.

AMLO supports Biden’s path to citizenship

It is important to explain that the Mexican president also mentioned Biden’s path to citizenship. By this, we refer to a proposal by the current president of the US that seeks to open a path to citizenship for immigrants living in the country undocumented, a number that currently hovers around 11 million.

AMLO stated that no president has ever attempted a feat of such magnitude and praised the current administration’s efforts to effectively address a controversial issue as irregular migration within the US.

It is possible that further discussions regarding the path to citizenship will come to light at a meeting at the White House today, Thursday, November 18, which will include the Mexican President, President Biden and the Canadian Prime Minister.

Biden’s plans no longer include path to citizenship

Although international political leaders such as the Mexican President support a path to citizenship, it is a proposal that currently seems practically unfeasible due to the controversy it sparks within Congress.

Thus, the immigration provisions in Biden’s budget package currently do not include a path to citizenship, but a proposal to expand the parole power to offer temporary protection from deportation to approximately 7 million undocumented immigrants.

Under this proposal, eligible undocumented foreigners could be protected for up to 10 years and would be eligible for benefits such as employment authorization documents and other social services.

However, Biden’s immigration plans have been tremendously delayed due to the debate in Congress, but also due to the surge of illegal border crossings, which has put his administration in a very difficult position.
