Low-Income Immigrant Families Feared Accessing Benefits in 2020

Low-income immigrants avoided receiving public benefits during the pandemic

The health crisis, immigrants and the Trump administration

Governments around the world certainly had to implement unconventional emergency measures as the global Coronavirus pandemic spread rapidly and uncontrollably to almost every corner of the planet. The US was no exception.

In fact, for many months, this North American country was the main epicenter of the pandemic since the contagion figures increased exponentially in a matter of weeks, as did the mortality rate related to the health crisis. Therefore, then-President Donald Trump adopted a series of measures and strategies to save as many lives as possible and, at the same time, keep the economy afloat amid the global emergency.

However, many measures implemented by the Trump administration since the first massive outbreak of COVID-19 directly affected the immigration system and almost completely paused international transit in the US, which caught the attention of activists mainly because his administration had always wanted to reduce immigration levels at all costs.

Thus, under the Trump administration, certain vulnerable immigrant communities faced truly difficult situations in the midst of the global health crisis and risked their integrity for fear of deportation.

Low-income immigrants avoided receiving public benefits during the pandemic

It has been more than a year since the first Coronavirus outbreak reached the North American territory and many of the repercussions of Trump’s policies on the immigration system are now coming to light.

To give a specific example, a recent study conducted by the Urban Institute reveals that many low-income immigrant families refrained from accessing public benefits such as medical services or government financial assistance to protect their immigration status under the Trump administration. In other words, hundreds of immigrants who lost their jobs during the global pandemic and who experienced food insecurity did not access social benefits due to constant fear of deportation.

This fear was rooted in the Trump administration’s deportation record, which disproportionately increased undocumented immigrant detention operations within the US and expedited massive deportations.

Let’s look at the study’s main findings:

  • The health crisis negatively affected the employment of at least one family member of 51.8% of low-income immigrant families.
  • 41.4% of low-income immigrant families reported food insecurity in the midst of the health crisis.
  • 25.7% of low-income immigrant families reported that at least one family member did not receive medical assistance due to costs.
  • More than 1 in 4 adults in low-income immigrant families reported that their families abstained from accessing social benefits to protect their immigration status or for fear that they would not be able to apply for a Green Card in the future.
