Lawmaker group ask Mayorkas to protect Dreamers

On Friday June 25, a very influential group of lawmakers sent a letter to Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of the DHS (Department of Homeland Security), asking him to offer protection from deportation to young immigrants known as Dreamers.

The group of 38 lawmakers, members of the US House of Representatives, specifically ask the Biden administration to offer some kind of relief from deportation for the so-called “Documented Dreamers” who are on the Green Card waiting list, which grants Lawful Permanent Residence.

Currently, there are approximately 200,000 Dreamers who are in limbo due to Green Card long waiting times. Adding to that, the vast majority are children of H-1B visa holders, that is, highly qualified foreign workers who provide their services in important sectors such as technology, engineering, research and science.

In the letter, the lawmakers urge DHS to increase protection for young immigrants and expand immigration alternatives available to them, including updating and restructuring DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), an immigration benefit that protects eligible Dreamers from deportation for two years, with the possibility of extension.

Who are Dreamers and why are they important to America?

Dreamers are young immigrants who came to the US when they were minors, or, rather, who were brought to the country without legal documentation and who, in their vast majority, have resided in North American territory for as long as they can remember and know almost nothing about their countries of origin.

The term “Documented Dreamers” refers to young immigrants (children or young adults) who have resided in the US for a considerable period of time as dependents of a foreign national holding a work visa. In the letter, lawmakers urge DHS to improve conditions specifically for “Documented Dreamers”.

This immigrant community, Dreamers in general, has always been in limbo and in the middle of a fairly extensive political debate. This is mainly because the only direct benefit they currently have is DACA, but it is only a temporary protection that does not provide any guarantee for their future in the US. Adding to that, the fact that they came to the country as minors undoubtedly makes it clear that it was not entirely their decision and that they were dependent on someone else. That is the reason why there are currently multiple proposals under congressional review that could open a path to permanent legalization for these young immigrants.

Adding to that, Dreamers have also become an essential part of America’s workforce, primarily because they are now workers in all sorts of sectors of the local market.
