Judge Releases 10 Immigrants from Detention Centers

Judge releases immigrants from detention centers in Pennsylvania

Judge says ICE is not prepared for the pandemic

Last Tuesday, a US judge ordered the release of 10 immigrants that were being held in Pennsylvania.

The judge openly declares that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) is not fully trained for a massive spread of Coronavirus within its facilities.

Several senior government officials have expressed their views regarding immigration detention centers as well.

In fact, even celebrities have spoken about their concerns of the detained immigrant community.

The main reasons for the release

  • The released immigrants were in different jails and detention centers in Pennsylvania.
  • The 10 immigrants have a vulnerable health for the spread of COVID-19.
  • The judge declares that ICE has no prevention with detainees, much less with the immigrant community.
  • ICE was not offering medical support to the 10 released immigrants who have health problems.

Judges around the country ask for the same

Multiple judges in different states have voiced their concerns about the detained immigrant community as well.

Immigration detention centers do not have sufficient supplies to protect detainees.

Normally, these centers do not have enough space for the number of people they receive daily.

They also do not have enough medical support or medicine supplies.

Thus, they could be a threat to a massive spread of the Coronavirus.

ICE reaction

The response from border entities is that ICE is already supplied with masks, soap, and disinfectant for detainees and federal employees.

ICE is not allowing more people to enter detention centers.

In fact, they are implementing an emergency measure to deport immigrants who are currently arriving at the borders.

The deportation process takes around 96 minutes. In other words, no new immigrant can enter a detention center, this includes minors.

ICE is heavily deporting people who do not have a hearing assigned yet with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

Therefore, they are trying to evict as many immigrants as possible before there is an outbreak on centers’ facilities.

It is important to note that ICE employees are very concerned about the spread as they also have families and want to protect them from possible contagion.

Employees are trying to control the situation as best they can according to the rules and regulations for immigrants.

Many minors are trying to cross the borders on their own and unfortunately, due to the circumstances of COVID-19, they must be deported immediately to their country.

The prevention that they must take is very great because if a person is infected in one of the immigration detention centers in the country, it is most likely that there will be a massive contagion.

In the centers there are many elderly who are in danger since their health is more vulnerable for the virus.

It is important to take care of ourselves and our families during the pandemic. There are adverse and uncertain situations we are going through, but there are always solutions to protect our community.
