Immigration Law Enforcement Also Needs Attention

Improving immigration enforcement is also a priority

Biden’s effort to improve the immigration sector

The US immigration system felt a strong impact under the Donald Trump administration, which used all the tools at its disposal to reduce the number of immigrants entering the country annually. With this, we refer to all sorts of foreign communities, from asylum seekers and refugees, who need international assistance, to highly qualified foreign workers in areas such as science and research and relatives of American citizens.

The new administration of the US, led by President Joe Biden, also considers immigration as a relevant issue. However, for the current president, who took office on January 20, 2021, immigration is rather positive for the economy, the growth of local businesses and necessary to overcome the crisis brought by the global Coronavirus pandemic.

Therefore, since Biden’s position is completely different from Trump’s when it comes to the immigration sector, his administration has removed multiple restrictions implemented by the previous administration and plans to promote comprehensive reform to expand immigration in the US and increase legal alternatives available for foreigners to come to the country.

To achieve this goal, the Biden administration has introduced several essential proposals such as:

  • A path to citizenship for millions of immigrants who crossed the borders without prior authorization and currently live in the US undocumented.
  • Raise the annual refugee limit to 125,000, the highest number in the US’ recent history.
  • Improve the political asylum process to assist people in need of international protection.
  • Expand alternatives available for highly skilled foreign workers and essential workers, such as those related to the US food supply chain and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.

Improving immigration enforcement is also a priority

Several critics and members of the opposition state that Biden’s immigration proposal is based on “amnesty first, enforcement never,” which expands and improves alternatives available to immigrants, including the most vulnerable populations and undocumented people, but bypasses immigration enforcement.

The Biden administration has received multiple criticisms for the lack of proposals to improve immigration enforcement, both within the US and at the borders, and action plans to reduce irregular immigration and ensure harmony between immigrant populations and American citizens.

In fact, according to a recent report by The Columbus Tribune, comprehensive immigration reform also needs a balance between legal processes and immigration enforcement, which includes penalties for people who cross borders without legal documentation such as deportation, a very sensitive and controversial issue.

The US detention and deportation system also needs a major restructuring in order to improve the entire immigration system. Otherwise, imbalance could lead to an immigration crisis within the country due to the lack of control over irregular immigration.

The Biden government has stated that it plans to increase protection and surveillance at the borders through high-quality technology. Adding to that, the health risk generated by the global Coronavirus pandemic is still present, which prevents thousands of undocumented immigrants from being resettled within the US and they are returned almost immediately after crossing the borders without authorization.
