Immigration Bill to Take DNA Samples at Borders

Senators introduce bill to take DNA tests at borders

The current situation of immigrant minors at the borders

Due to multiple influencing factors such as the change of administration in the US, extreme climatic conditions in Central America, famine, violence and the lack of opportunities, thousands of migrants are arriving at the US borders without legal documentation, which is causing a gigantic social controversy and is also delaying President Joe Biden’s immigration plans.

It is important to clarify that, apart from the exponential increase in illegal border crossings during the last two months, the attention of the American public is mainly focused on unaccompanied immigrant minors trying to enter the US, who seek international protection. President Biden, unlike his predecessor Donald Trump, does not agree with deporting minors amid the health crisis caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Therefore, his administration is resettling them in temporary HHS (Department of Health and Human Services) facilities, before sending them to a family member or sponsor within the US. However, the number of minors apprehended at the borders has increased substantially, therefore, HHS centers are reaching their maximum capacity and border forces are not always able to transfer them to these facilities within 72 hours, as allowed by local law.

Adding to that, minors are also often victims of precarious situations such as abuse, violence, kidnapping or human trafficking. Therefore, the fact that they arrive at the borders unaccompanied gives the opportunity for unscrupulous people to use them to enter the US, stating that they are their relatives.

Senators introduce bill to take DNA tests at borders

On Wednesday, March 24, 2021, to protect the integrity of immigrant minors, several Republican senators introduced an immigration bill called the “End Child Trafficking Now Act,” which would require DNA testing for anyone who claims to be a relative of a minor to enter the US.

Senator Marsha Blackburn, who led the project, stated that after visiting the borders last weekend, she was able to witness conditions in which immigrant children arrive to the country’s borders. When Blackburn introduced this act, she openly stated that “Drug cartels and gangs are using children to falsely present themselves as family units and seek asylum at our Southern Border.

Therefore, senators propose to perform DNA tests on any adult who tries to cross the US borders with a minor. Blackburn states that by doing the DNA tests, the country will send a clear message to anyone who tries to use a minor for their own benefit.
