Immigrants Fear Receiving Dose of COVID-19 Vaccine

The first doses of COVID-19 vaccine are already in the US

For most of 2020, the world went through, and is still going through, a health crisis due to a global pandemic unprecedented in the recent history of mankind. The massive outbreak of Coronavirus was sudden and spread uncontrollably around the world, reaching almost every corner of our planet.

In the case of the US, being a fairly busy country, it quickly became the main epicenter of the global pandemic and the number of people infected with COVID-19 grew exponentially in a matter of weeks, leading to the death of thousands of people with underlying health conditions, which made them more vulnerable to the virus.

However, after more than 10 months of research, health experts created two vaccines approved by the US for global delivery. Therefore, the Trump administration is already distributing the first doses among those most vulnerable to the virus such as the elderly, citizens with underlying health problems, healthcare professionals and essential workers.

Foreign essential workers fear receiving doses of COVID-19 vaccine

There are many doubts among the American population and immigrant communities about the COVID-19 vaccine. For instance, speaking specifically about foreigners currently residing in the US, there is growing uncertainty regarding whether to receive the vaccine or not.

This is because, on the one hand, the American population elected Joe Biden as the next president of the country, who will take office in January 2021; he has a more welcoming stance when it comes to immigration and plans to increase benefits for foreigners in the US. However, on the other hand, the Trump administration has been very strict with immigrant communities during the last four years and hundreds of foreigners fear receiving the COVID-19 vaccine as their personal information might be used for deportation proceedings.

The COVID-19 vaccine for immigrant communities

It is important to clarify that foreign workforce is essential to overcome the current crisis, including undocumented immigrants. In fact, in one of our most recent articles, we talk about a report that reveals that 69% of undocumented workers have been essential during the massive Coronavirus outbreak as they work in sectors such as the US food supply chain, the health system, commercial transport and cleaning services.

Therefore, the incoming Biden administration, along with dozens of organizations and experts, state that immigrant communities should also have the opportunity to receive the COVID-19 vaccine without jeopardizing their immigration status.

For instance, the US Surgeon General recently stated that the documentation status should not be taken into account in the vaccination process. He assures that leaving out essential workers would harm the American population and local businesses, which benefit greatly from foreign workforce.
