Illegal Immigration Increased during May

Illegal immigration increased by 36% in May compared to April

Illegal immigration amid the global pandemic

Since the arrival of the Coronavirus in the North American territory, all aspects of immigration have changed considerably, this includes illegal immigration.

It is well known that the borders of almost every country were temporarily closed to prevent the import and export of the virus.

In the case of the US, Trump’s administration decided to ban immigrants from entering the country for a period longer than two months.

Some of the measures implemented were:

  • Ban applications for asylum and refuge.
  • Close the offices of the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS).
  • Increase border regulations to prevent illegal immigration.
  • Close the borders to any non-essential trip.

The Trump government assures that these measures helped to:

  • Reduce illegal immigration.
  • Protect the North American territory from a second wave of Coronavirus outbreak.
  • Safeguard local resources only for legal citizens.
  • Protect USCIS employees, avoiding face-to-face appointments.

Therefore, due to the regulations implemented by the current administration of the US, immigration decreased considerably during March and April, 2020.

However, with the reopening of USCIS offices, immigration processes are slowly returning to normal.

The latest figures

The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) makes monthly statements about the number of immigrants trying to cross borders illegally.

Official figures indicate that illegal immigration increased during May, 2020, by 35% compared to the previous months.

Let’s review some of the official figures:

  • During April, border forces captured 16,966 undocumented immigrants.
  • During May, the number increased and border forces captured 23,118 undocumented immigrants, which is 35% more than in April.

Regulations during the health crisis have been strict and immigration protocols are not being followed correctly.

For instance, deportations are carried out almost immediately when an undocumented immigrant is captured by border forces.

What does the future look like?

The current administration in the US has tirelessly tried to reduce immigration, and in fact it has been reduced considerably during the health crisis caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.

However, the May figures show that there is an increasing trend in illegal immigration and it is very possible that this figure will double during the following months.

Several critics around the country argue that to reduce illegal immigration, the government must:

  • Offer options to make it easier for immigrants to enter the US.
  • Immigration processes should be streamlined rather than increasingly delayed.
  • Regulations should be softer so that more immigrants are eligible to enter the US and avoid migrating illegally.
  • If the government wants to reduce immigration argumenting that this population does not contribute anything to the economy, then, certain requirements must be implemented for the immigrant communities to promote the socio-economic development of the country.

Therefore, in the coming months we will be able to see the real impact of the pandemic and the regulations imposed by Trump’s administration regarding immigration.
