Hope Among Activists and Immigrant Rights Advocates

Immigrant advocates are cautiously optimistic about the Biden administration

Repairing and restructuring the US immigration system

The Biden administration has already delivered on several of its promises regarding the immigration sector. During his political campaign for the November 2020 election, President Biden initially promised to remove the Trump administration’s restrictions on immigration in order to pave the way for comprehensive immigration reform.

During his first weeks in office, President Biden has issued multiple Executive Orders and Memoranda removing Trump’s restrictive policies on the immigration system. The current administration of the US has lifted limitations on humanitarian programs for vulnerable immigrant populations such as political asylum, employment-based visas, the local detention and deportation system, inter alia.

Adding to that, the Biden administration also plans to repair the damage caused by Trump’s policies. To give a specific example, the current president of the US recently issued an executive order to reunify immigrant families separated at the borders under Trump’s “Zero Tolerance Policy”.

The main purpose of the Biden administration is to promote comprehensive immigration reform, which would allow restructuring the immigration system in accordance with current times and global needs.

Immigrant advocates are cautiously optimistic about the Biden administration

Dozens of immigrant rights advocates have commented on President Biden’s first actions in office, primarily those related to the immigration system.

Many of them faced and challenged the Trump administration in multiple legal processes due to restrictions it implemented on immigration in the US, diminishing opportunities for foreign workers and hindering processes available to the most vulnerable immigrant communities.

Adding to that, they are continuously monitoring the current administration and will supervise every decision of President Biden to hold him accountable for the promises he made during his political campaign regarding the immigration sector.

Several experts also state that, for the Biden administration to bring about the changes it wants to the immigration system, the general view of the American population about immigrants must change because, to achieve comprehensive reform, multicultural integration and inclusion is needed.

In their view, the American population must realize the value of immigration and its contribution to the economic system. Hundreds of local businesses rely heavily on foreign workforce and most foreigners work in essential sectors such as the US food supply chain (agriculture, packaging industry, food transportation), the health system, the technology industry, education, science, inter alia.

Therefore, for the current government to be able to promote comprehensive immigration reform, it is essential to use all the executive power to create integration projects, include immigrant communities in government programs and show the real impact of immigration on the economy.
