George Bush and immigration

It is important to clarify that former President Bush inaugurated the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, back in 2003.

This is the federal entity in charge of protecting the borders from illegal immigration, checking the merchandise entering the country and supervising immigration detention centers.

The current administration of the US has increased regulations and protocols implemented by ICE to reduce illegal immigration and to detain undocumented foreigners around the country.

In fact, ICE’s growth in recent years has been so abysmal, that there is even a new documentary on Netflix called Immigration Nation, which shows the entity’s protocols to detain undocumented immigrants.

Thus, because the immigration sector has been substantially restricted by ICE during the term of the current president, Donald Trump, many critics claim that Bush contributed to current restrictions.

However, former President Bush has repeatedly voiced his support for immigration. On top of that, he states that immigration contributes greatly to the nation, as long as it is legal.

Let’s look at some examples of his views on immigration:

  • In the introduction of his new book, the former president states: “While I recognize that immigration can be an emotional issue, I reject the premise that it is a partisan issue (…) My hope is that this book will help focus our collective attention on the positive impacts that immigrants are making on our country.”
  • During 2019, during President Trump’s term, Bush openly declared: “America’s immigration history made us who we are (…) May we never forget that immigration is a blessing and a strength.”

Therefore, some critics claim that former President George Bush created ICE with the intention of reducing illegal immigration and the fact that Trump is using this federal agency to restrict immigration in general has nothing to do with him.
