Fox News broadcasts debate on Biden’s immigration policies

On Wednesday, February 24, 2021, Fox News aired a debate in which the former senior advisor to then-President Donald Trump and the architect of his administration’s immigration policies, commented on the actions of the current president of the US, Joe Biden, on the immigration system.

Stephen Miller is known for having an extremely restrictive vision regarding immigration and was the person in charge of promoting policies that substantially restricted the entry of foreigners to the US, hindered humanitarian processes, increased the separation of immigrant families at the borders, inter alia.

Paradoxically, even though his own policies have been labeled as “inhumane and draconian” dozens of times, Miller openly stated that Biden’s policies are “cruel and inhumane” and are reducing the border protection structure created by the Trump administration over the past four years.

Miller specifically commented on two recent presidential decisions:

1. Biden removed Trump’s restrictions on the issuance of Green Cards

In April 2020, former President Trump suspended the issuance of Green Cards on grounds of health emergency and unemployment rate. Green Cards grant lawful permanent residence to immigrants, whether it is through family or work application, Diversity Visa Lottery, inter alia.

The Trump administration extended this restriction multiple times and it was still in effect when President Joe Biden took office in late January 2021.

Therefore, following his immigration ideals and fulfilling his promises, President Biden revoked Trump’s Proclamation suspending the issuance of Green Cards on February 24. Biden stated, also through a Presidential Proclamation, that this restriction affects local companies that benefit greatly from foreign workforce.

Regarding Biden’s arguments, the former senior advisor stated that, instead of hiring foreign workers and allowing local companies to pay lower wages, his government should focus on promoting local employment and reducing the current unemployment rate, encouraging businesses to hire American workers and creating internal growth programs for unemployed youth.

However, it is important to clarify that for local companies to be able to hire foreign workers, one of the most important requirements is to demonstrate that there are no trained American personnel to fill the job. Therefore, local companies state that it is absolutely necessary to allow and expand business immigration in times of crisis to keep the economy afloat.

2. Biden reopens center for unaccompanied immigrant minors

Because the HHS (Department of Health and Human Services) centers have already reached their maximum capacity and have no space to house the growing number of unaccompanied immigrant minors arriving at the borders, the Biden administration decided to reopen another facility, which was previously used by the Trump administration and received countless criticism due to the conditions in which immigrant minors lived there.

Miller stated that “What we are seeing here is the cruelty and inhumanity of Joe Biden’s immigration policies (…) He came here and he announced that there is an open door and that young people who come into this country illegally are going to be resettled instead of returned.”

The Biden administration clarified that this facility will be used only as a temporary emergency measure to prevent conglomerations at HHS centers, however, there is growing controversy about it.
