Foreign Labor Shortages Leave Crops Unharvested

Farm owner criticizes the local immigration system

The owner of a family farm located on the Oregon-Idaho border, Shay Myers, who is also a member of the American Business Immigration Coalition, recently stated that his family lost nearly 150,000 pounds of asparagus in the spring due to foreign workforce shortages.

In his opinion, the bureaucratic obstacles to hiring foreign farmworkers, even if they are already inside the US, are so abysmal that his family lost about $180,000 on that crop, which is an entire year’s worth of asparagus.

After working on local farms for more than three generations, his family realizes that the agricultural sector relies almost entirely on foreign workforce and, because, in his opinion, the current immigration system is broken, farmers are unable to keep up with local market demands.

In fact, he openly states, “the nation’s farmers, ranchers and dairy producers have faced massive labor shortages for years, and our industry is hurting”.

Labor shortages in the agricultural sector are not new

It is worth mentioning that labor shortages in the agricultural sector have not only been present during the global Coronavirus pandemic or after former President Trump hindered certain immigration processes, but for several years now and the situation is also related to a “political war between anti-immigrant vs pro-immigrant”.

Regarding this immigration-related battle, Myers argues, “I’m a staunch conservative, but being conservative doesn’t mean being anti-immigrant. Politicians have been talking about fixing our immigration system for more than 30 years, but they haven’t really done anything about it”.

In fact, in June 2020, in the midst of the first massive outbreak of Coronavirus, dozens of farmers declared that they needed to hire personnel from abroad in order to protect and stimulate the US food supply chain.
