Research: Immigrants drive Florida’s economy

At the end of August 2021, New American Economy released the results of a research called “New Americans in Miami-Dade County”, which reveal the role of immigrants in the economy of Miami-Dade County, located in the state of Florida.

First of all, it is important to mention that:

  • Immigrants make up 54.7% of Miami-Dade County’s total population.
  • In 2019, immigrants made up 65% of Miami-Dade County’s workforce.

Now, knowing these figures, let’s talk about some of the most important findings of the research:

  • In 2019, 86.4% of workers in agriculture were immigrants. Also, 76.9% of manufacturers were immigrants.
  • 61.5% of workers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields were immigrants in 2019.
  • Also in 2019, 73% of immigrants in Miami-Dade County were business owners, contributing more than $2.9 billion that year.
  • Thanks to immigrants’ robust consumption, they spent an estimated $33.9 billion in 2019, which boosted the county’s economy and local business growth.
  • Immigrants are the front line when it comes to entrepreneurship projects. In 2019, 73.9% of Miami-Dade County entrepreneurs were immigrants.

Adding to that, the research also reveals that the role of immigrants is essential to Florida’s economy in general and not just to Miami-Dade County.

Is this the case only for Florida?

The answer is no. Recently, several studies, reports and research have shown that the presence of immigrants is absolutely essential to keep economic stability across the US, not just in Florida.

In fact, in one of our most recent articles, we talked about certain arguments and facts that support the idea that immigrants are a pillar for the national economy, not only as essential workers in all kinds of local market sectors, but also as shoppers, entrepreneurs, students and, in essence, part of the American socioeconomic fabric.

Aside from that, it is worth mentioning that the vast majority of immigrants who come to the US have the firm intention of building a promising future, finding a stable income and helping their loved ones, so they give their best to achieve these goals.

Therefore, immigrants usually accept unconventional or physically demanding jobs, also in sectors where there is a high labor shortage, which undoubtedly contributes to the growth of these industries and stimulates the country’s economy.
