Crisis in Central America increases immigration to the US

The massive spread of the Coronavirus reached almost every corner of the world. However, there are territories and countries that felt a stronger impact due to their particular conditions. For instance, the Central American territory was tremendously affected by the sanitary emergency.

With this, we refer to the fact that not only the health system felt the impact of the global crisis, but also the local economy and the unemployment rate. Most Central American countries do not have enough resources to mitigate the impact of the pandemic, protect the economy in times of crisis, or the infrastructure necessary to house large numbers of people in the event of a health emergency, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adding to that, in November 2020, several Central American countries felt the impact of natural disasters, which worsened the economic situation and left thousands of families affected, who are trying to seek new opportunities to rebuild their lives, protect their beloved ones and find economic stability.

Therefore, thousands of Central American citizens decided to migrate to the US to request international protection through humanitarian programs such as political asylum. In fact, in one of our most recent articles, we talk about the testimony of dozens of people affected by natural disasters in Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua, who had to migrate due to lack of resources and government support.

First migrant caravan of 2021 leaves with more than 2000 people

On Friday, January 15, 2021, a migrant caravan left Honduras to cross the Guatemalan border, without following processes to request legal documentation, the Mexican border and finally arrive to the US to request political asylum.

According to estimates, the caravan from Honduras has more than 2,000 people, who have been affected by the health crisis caused by the Coronavirus, as well as by natural disasters and unemployment. They hope to have more benefits and opportunities with the incoming administration (Biden-Harris), which has promised to reform the immigration system to protect the most vulnerable immigrant communities.

Authorities in Guatemala and Mexico are creating strategies to stop and disperse the caravan, preventing it from reaching the US and worsening the border and immigration crisis before the president-elect takes office on January 20, 2021.

Central American authorities have already adopted action plans and agreements to stop caravans from Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador. In fact, in mid-December 2020, the authorities of these countries came together to prevent a caravan of migrants from reaching the borders of the US without legal documentation.
