Experts Call for Immigration Reform to Benefit Local Businesses

Think tanks propose immigration reform

Business immigration under the Trump administration

The US’ immigration system offers multiple alternatives for local companies to request personnel from abroad. There are several visa programs, such as the H-1B visa, which give highly qualified foreign workers the opportunity to come to the country and work in essential sectors of the local market such as technology, science or research.

During the last decades, business immigration has played an essential role in the US’ economic growth, increasing entrepreneurship projects, investments, and employment opportunities for the American population.

However, the current administration, headed by President Donald Trump, does not entirely agree with the current immigration system and has tried to transform policies by implementing more than 400 changes to current processes. Trump’s immigration policies have made business immigration processes more difficult, preventing local businesses from hiring foreign workforce.

Speaking specifically about business immigration, the most notorious restrictions were implemented after the sudden arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic in the North American territory, which allowed the Trump administration to substantially restrict immigration.

However, history is about to change as the American population elected Democratic nominee Joe Biden in the presidential election on November 3. His administration has a more welcoming view on immigration and will possibly reverse Trump’s policies.

Think tanks propose immigration reform

According to the opinion of several expert groups on technology issues, also known as Think Tanks, the Biden government must reform the US’ immigration system in order to improve and promote American innovation, as well as technological development and research.

They assure that immigration plays an essential role in the technology sector, as highly qualified foreign workers bring innovation, talent, dedication, entrepreneurial spirit and are willing to gain work experience in the US while contributing to the socioeconomic development of local businesses.

Adding to that, experts state that the Trump administration has restricted possibilities for local companies to use alternatives from the business immigration system, which has increased qualified workforce shortages and delayed the national process to overcome the economic crisis brought by the global COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the experts assures that “we’re shooting ourselves in the foot making it so much harder for people to come here (…) Because of the fact that people want to come to the United States to live and work, that’s one of our greatest competitive advantages. It’s something I expect the Biden administration to reverse.”
