Democrats request to extend DACA and TPS

Democratic Senators request help from Trump to foreign workers

Democratic leaders request help for immigrants

Thousands of working immigrants are at risk of deportation for not being able to renew their residence permits due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

DACA

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a program that benefits immigrants who crossed the borders illegally when they were minors.

This benefit allows them to legally work and study in the US.

However, since President Trump took office in 2017, he has attempted to cancel DACA argumenting that no immigrant crossing the border illegally deserves to have a legal residence permit.

TPS

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a program that millions of immigrants use to legally reside in the US when they cannot be deported for several risks in their countries.

This program allows immigrants to have a valid legal residence status in the country. It is important to clarify that this permission is granted only temporarily, but it has helped millions of immigrant families.

Trump’s administration has also proposed removing this program to avoid “public charge” of immigrants who use social and government resources.

Democratic senators ask Trump for help

On April 16, approximately 34 Democratic senators made a statement asking Trump’s government for help in extending DACA and TPS permits during the current health crisis.

They argue that thousands of immigrant workers depend on it, and many of them are key players in the fight against the Coronavirus.

What they declare is that more than 300,000 workers considered essential during the health crisis are at risk of losing their residence permit due to current immigration policies.

In the official petition, the senators declare: “DACA and TPS beneficiaries are vital contributors to our economy and the health care workforce on the front lines of the battle against the Coronavirus.”

Therefore, they claim that thousands of foreign workers who practice their profession in the health sector fear deportation while struggling daily to mitigate the repercussions of the pandemic.

From their point of view, that is unfair to immigrants who contribute to the development of the country’s medical infrastructure.

Furthermore, they declare that if migrant workers are deported, the country will lose crucial resources and opportunities during the health crisis.

Government response

The President Trump has no responded to this request.

However, the government is awaiting the response from the US Supreme Court of Justice regarding DACA because since 2018 the president has requested the cancellation of the program.

The current government must make prompt decisions to protect all foreign workers who contribute to the socioeconomic growth of the US.

Furthermore, it is important to remember that thousands of immigrant workers have brought their families to the country and are one of the principle supports for future generations.
