Democratic Senator Predicts Border Crisis

Democratic Senator comments on current border situation

The current situation at the US border

There is growing controversy and concern among the American population due to the surge of immigrants trying to cross the US borders without legal documentation. The current complication is that many of these immigrants are unaccompanied minors.

Under the Trump administration, the removal of minors apprehended at the borders was allowed during the massive outbreak of Coronavirus. However, since President Joe Biden has a different stance on immigration policies, his administration is not deporting unaccompanied minors, but is instead transferring them to the HHS (Department of Health and Human Services) facilities, as specified by local immigration law.

The controversy was growing mainly because border forces such as CBP (Customs and Border Protection) were not being able to transfer minors within 72 hours of apprehension because the HHS facilities did not have enough space until the beginning of this week, when the Biden administration ordered to reopen these centers at pre-pandemic levels to be able to house more unaccompanied minors.

In addition, CBP has reported around 300 minors apprehended at the borders on a daily basis in recent weeks. In fact, on March 8, CBP had in its custody approximately 3,200 minors, who had not been transferred to the HHS facilities and, just two days later, on March 10, border forces already had almost 3,500 minors in their custody.

Democratic Senator comments on current border situation

In an interview with CNN, Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley commented on the current border situation, especially when it comes to unaccompanied immigrant minors.

Merkley states that the Biden administration is doing everything possible to protect the integrity of these children and prevent them from facing deportation proceedings, but that “it’s approaching a crisis” if conditions remain the same.

However, Senator Merkley defended Biden’s strategy as his policies seek to repair much of the damage caused to these immigrant minors under the Donald Trump administration. He stated that the current administration is acting efficiently so that they “spend the minimum amount of time in these Border Patrol stations where the circumstances are totally inappropriate for children.”

Avoid precarious situations and migrate safely

It is a reality that the current administration of the US is using all the tools and resources at its disposal to improve the immigration system and implement more humane policies to assist the most vulnerable immigrant communities and attract talent from abroad through employment and study programs.

However, the Biden administration also has an obligation to enforce immigration law both at the borders and within the US and, therefore, it is extremely important to migrate safely by following legal guidelines established by the local immigration system.
