Democratic Leaders Consider New Immigration Provision

Democratic leaders plan to introduce new immigration proposal

Democratic leaders’ ambitious plans on immigration

Since Biden’s arrival to the White House in January 2021, Democratic leaders have used every tool and resource at their disposal to enact lasting changes on the local immigration system, which was tremendously restricted under Donald Trump’s term between 2017 and the beginning of this year.

In fact, the immigration plans of the Biden administration and certain Democratic leaders in Congress are quite ambitious. To give a specific example, one of the main focuses of Biden’s immigration reform involves a path to citizenship for millions of immigrants residing in the US undocumented.

In order to officially implement such a law, the Biden administration needs help from Congress. However, this proposal has sparked monumental controversy and is currently in limbo.

Congressional debate intervenes in Biden’s immigration plans

In order to introduce a path to citizenship without facing Republican obstructionism, the Biden administration included an immigration resolution in the reconciliation process, which would allow it to pass the 2022 budget package with only 51 votes in the Senate, instead of 60.

However, the road has not been as smooth as Democratic leaders had hoped since they have faced several challenges in order to include this immigration resolution in the spending bill, and the future is still uncertain for this proposal.

In fact, the Senate Parliamentarian recently rejected the immigration language included in the budget package twice, stating that, although the path to citizenship for undocumented foreign workers could bring benefits to the economy, it is not entirely a budgetary issue.

Democratic leaders plan to introduce new immigration proposal

In the midst of a gigantic controversy and after the Senate Parliamentarian rejected the immigration language in the budget package, Democratic leaders are thinking of another route of action to offer temporary amnesty to eligible undocumented immigrants.

According to sources close to the discussions, Democratic leaders are planning to use their parole power to introduce an immigration provision in their domestic policy bill, which would grant temporary residency to undocumented foreigners who meet certain eligibility criteria.

Through this parole power, Democratic leaders propose to grant the right to remain legally in the US for five years (with the possibility of extension) to undocumented immigrants who have resided in the country since 2011, which would include millions of foreign nationals.
