COVID-19 Vaccine Now Mandatory for Immigration Medical Examination

Requirement: COVID-19 vaccine for immigration medical examinations

Requirement: COVID-19 vaccine for immigration medical examinations

On Tuesday, September 14, the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) issued a Policy Alert, which states that as of October 1, 2021 (when Fiscal Year 2022 begins), foreigners who need to submit medical examinations for their immigration applications must also include COVID-19 vaccination certification.

This change in the US’ admissibility parameters comes after the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) updated the criteria for immigration medical examinations, taking into account what is in the best interest of the nation and public health.

Therefore, as of the first day of the next fiscal year, applicants subject to a medical examination during their immigration process must submit COVID-19 vaccination records to meet the admissibility criteria on health-related grounds.

Important Note

It is worth clarifying that this update applies to both medical examinations in the US and overseas.

The USCIS had already included this requirement in other processes

In late August, the CDC mandated that Green Card applicants must submit COVID-19 vaccination records beginning October 1 as well. That was the first update from the CDC to the USCIS.

Now, this change in local immigration processes applies not only to lawful permanent residency applicants (through the Green Card), but to any foreign national who must submit medical examinations.

At this point it is important to explain that applicants will be required to submit not only initial vaccination records, but proof that they have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in the case of two-dose vaccinations.
