COVID-19 Cases Rise at Immigration Detention Centers

Virginia immigration center reports 268 cases of Coronavirus

There was already a warning about detention centers

Since the massive outbreak of Coronavirus reached the US, dozens of human rights advocates warned about the risk present in immigration detention centers around the country.

Aside from the fact that the virus is highly contagious, crowds and overcrowded places increase the risk of mass spread.

Immigration detention centers became hotbeds of the virus, as activists and advocates predicted, mainly because:

  • There are not enough health and prevention supplies such as protective masks, gloves, anti-fluid gowns, hand sanitizer, soap, inter alia.
  • These centers are overcrowded, therefore, there is not enough space to have the required social distance to avoid a massive outbreak of Coronavirus.
  • Bathrooms are not always in an acceptable hygiene condition.
  • Immigrants do not bathe every day.
  • Border entities do not always follow hygiene protocols, which also put their employees’ health at risk.

Thus, the conditions of immigration detention centers increase the risk of a massive outbreak of Coronavirus.

In addition to that, there are dozens of immigrants who suffer from underlying health conditions that make them more vulnerable to catch the virus.

A detention center has 268 cases of Coronavirus

The number of Coronavirus-infected immigrants in detention centers increases exponentially and unstoppably. It is too late to prevent the massive outbreak and dozens of new positive cases are reported daily.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) is the entity in charge of supervising these detention centers and recently reported that, in one of its centers, almost 75% of detainees are infected with the COVID- 19.

ICE refers to the Virginia-based immigration detention center. This center houses approximately 360 people, and 268 tested positive for the Coronavirus.

According to official ICE reports, these individuals are isolated, complying with the social distancing required to prevent them from becoming carriers of the virus and infecting more detained immigrants.

Multiple immigrants testify that they are not only afraid of the Coronavirus, but also:

  • Express deportations in the midst of the global pandemic.
  • Waiting times to receive a response to their immigration applications.
  • The possibility of the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) postponing appointments again due to the health crisis.

ICE states that it is following the mandatory protocols and doing everything possible to protect the health of both immigrants and its employees.
