Brief Mentions Immigration Policies under the Biden Government

MPI talks about Biden's immigration promises

The American population chose the Democratic nominee

The US presidential elections, which took place on November 3, were quite uncertain, mainly because the candidates widely differ in opinion on how to handle the most important sectors of our society and current problems.

Clearly, the elections were more controversial than ever due to the health crisis brought by the global Coronavirus pandemic and the fact that the US is the main epicenter. Adding to that, there are other issues of public interest such as health care system, economy, unemployment rate, immigration policies, and discrimination.

Although the election results were quite tight, Joe Biden took the victory and will be the 46th president of the US. Biden is the former Vice President (Barack Obama’s term) and is the Democratic nominee.

Biden’s stance when it comes to the immigration sector

The Donald Trump administration has been embroiled in multiple legal processes and has received countless criticisms and complaints for the way it handled immigration.

In fact, President Trump’s immigration policies are classified as “arbitrary, inhuman, capricious and xenophobic” by dozens of activists, immigrant rights advocates, critics and immigration attorneys, who assure that the Trump administration is violating human rights while trying to curb and reduce immigration.

On the contrary, the president-elect states that immigration is something extremely positive for the US, mainly because immigrants tend to work in sectors that are essential for the local market and economic growth, which is necessary to overcome the current crisis.

Therefore, during his presidential campaign, Biden promised to remove or lift most restrictions implemented by the Trump administration on the immigration system.

MPI talks about Biden’s immigration promises

The Migration Policy Institute (MPI) released a brief called: “At the Starting Gate: The Incoming Biden Administration’s Immigration Plans”, which details the new government immigration proposals, as well as the viability and challenges of these promises.

According to the results of the investigation, several policies can easily be reversed through presidential proclamations or memorandum. However, there are some changes and modifications that will require legal processes due to their complexity and the way the Trump administration implemented them.

The MPI mentions immigration policies and processes such as:

  • Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP) or “Remain in Mexico.”
  • Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), an immigration benefit that has sparked a gigantic controversy during Donald Trump’s term.
  • Deportation proceedings.
  • Detention of undocumented immigrants within the US and the authority of border forces such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
  • Refugee admission.

Therefore, according to the MPI’s conclusion, Biden will have to face multiple challenges in order to fulfill his immigration promises, mainly because the Trump administration implemented more than 400 changes in the immigration system and many of them are quite small and difficult to distinguish.

However, there are also multiple viable avenues for the president-elect to fulfill his immigration promises.
