Biden’s Nominee for ICE Comments on Immigrants

Biden's nominee to lead ICE talks about his future duties

ICE, an entity mired in controversy

The DHS (Department of Homeland Security) has several branches focused on the immigration sector. One of these entities is ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), which is in charge of enforcing immigration law both at the borders and within the US.

ICE has always been embroiled in a gigantic social controversy because some of its duties include, among many other things, carrying out deportation proceedings, supervising immigration detention centers across the US, and conducting investigations and operations to arrest undocumented immigrants, especially individuals who may pose a threat to public safety or national security.

During former President Donald Trump’s term, who led the nation from 2017 to 2021, ICE protocols changed substantially as his administration transformed several protocols related to deportation processes and the number of undocumented immigrants detained within the US on a daily basis.

This was part of a national action plan to reduce irregular immigration levels and expedite removals of foreigners who enter the US without prior authorization, which was always a primary goal for the Trump administration.

Biden’s nominee to lead ICE talks about his future duties

It is quite evident that the current President of the US, Joe Biden, has a different stance than Trump when it comes to immigration law enforcement entities such as ICE. The Biden administration plans to use local resources effectively and efficiently to enforce the law, rather than implementing strict policies that could become a burden in the future.

Biden’s nominee to lead ICE, Ed Gonzalez, attended his hearing in front of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Thursday, July 15, where he gave his views on what the agency’s work is and what his approach to immigration will be.

Gonzalez was quite clear about the fact that, even if the current administration has a more welcoming approach to immigration, it does not mean that immigration law can be circumvented or that irregular immigration will be tolerated.

In fact, Biden’s pick to head ICE openly stated, “The American Dream relies upon the rule of law and a functioning legal immigration system (…) We should be strategic and smart in our enforcement”.

It is imperative that you avoid irregular migration and follow legal guidelines

When it comes to the immigration sector, irregular immigration is undoubtedly the most controversial issue among the American population and the nation’s political leaders. This is because, on the one hand, the country has an obligation to provide international assistance to those who need it most, but, on the other hand, to cross the US’ borders without documentation is to violate local law and, thus, this action is subject to immigration enforcement.

Therefore, as one must realize, irregular migration, regardless of the motive, can never be fully accepted among the local population and the best decision to protect your future in the US is always to follow legal guidelines established by the local immigration system.
