Biden Weighs Possibility of Lifting Border Restrictions

Biden may lift border restrictions soon

Trump’s restrictions on immigration

Immigration was always an essential sector for former President Donald Trump’s administration (2017-2021), but in a rather negative way. In the opinion of former President Trump, the massive flow of immigrants can become quite detrimental to the US in general, meaning that it is something that can affect multiple sectors and even the local population.

In fact, reducing immigration was always a priority for the Trump administration, which made hundreds of changes that substantially transformed most existing immigration processes. It is important to clarify that many of Trump’s immigration policies affect not only the processing of legitimate immigration applications, but also the US detention and deportation system, as well as immigration law enforcement protocols at the borders.

Regarding the latter, the Trump administration implemented a series of regulations that changed certain guidelines of border forces such as CBP (Customs and Border Protection) when it comes to apprehending undocumented immigrants and carrying out deportation processes in the shortest possible time. Adding to that, Trump hired more than 10,000 ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents, another branch of DHS (Department of Homeland Security) in charge of enforcing immigration law within the US.

In other words, under the Trump administration, border restrictions increased substantially, as did deportations and the number of immigration agents tasked with detaining undocumented foreigners both within the country and at the borders.

Pandemic contributed to immigration restrictions

Aside from the fact that the Trump administration always intended to reduce immigration at all costs, the sudden arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic allowed it to expand immigration restrictions and pause the flow of foreigners almost completely for a considerable period of time. It is worth mentioning that, in the midst of the health crisis, immigration levels not only declined in the US, but also in most countries.

However, despite the fact that it was a global pattern, several activists, immigrant rights advocates, humanitarian organizations and critics repeatedly stated that the Trump administration used the global sanitary emergency as an excuse to fulfill its immigration agenda.

For instance, when the first massive outbreak of COVID-19 reached the North American territory, President Trump made use of Title 42 to allow express deportations due to the health risk.

Biden may lift border restrictions soon

Currently, the Biden administration is using all the resources and tools at its disposal to repair the damage caused by the Trump administration on the immigration system. Naturally, one of the most gigantic challenges facing the current president is related to border restrictions.

This is because, on the one hand, the health risk has substantially decreased and the Biden administration technically could lift Title 42 and open the US’ borders. However, at the same time, CBP has reported an increasing number of border apprehensions over the past few months, which undoubtedly puts the Biden administration at a crossroads.
