Biden to Allow the Entry of Vulnerable Immigrants to the US

The Biden administration to admit “particularly vulnerable” immigrants

Biden’s DHS (Department of Homeland Security) recently announced that it will allow immigrants deemed “particularly vulnerable” to enter the US. This would be a humanitarian exception to the current border restriction (Title 42), which bans the processing of most immigration cases at the borders due to the health risk related to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the DHS statement, the Biden administration plans to allow up to 250 immigrants to enter the US on a daily basis under this exception, so long as they meet certain requirements. Some eligible scenarios are:

  • Immigrant families with very young children (newborns, infants, and toddlers).
  • Immigrants who are ill.
  • Immigrants who have been attacked or threatened while waiting in Mexico for their opportunity to enter the US.

This is another attempt by the Biden administration to restructure the entire immigration system, remove restrictions implemented by former President Trump, and offer international assistance to the most vulnerable immigrant populations, which has always been one of its priorities.

However, several activist groups and immigrant rights advocates recognize this decision as something positive, but also state that border restrictions related to the health crisis continue to affect thousands of innocent migrants, who, in their vast majority, need to request international protection through humanitarian alternatives such as political asylum or refuge.
