Biden Asks Congress for Funds to Investigate Immigration Agencies

President Biden asks Congress for funds to oversee immigration agencies

On Friday, April 9, 2021, President Joe Biden asked Congress to increase funding for workforce oversight offices, which constantly inspect and supervise practices and protocols implemented by border entities such as ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and CBP (Customs and Border Protection).

When introducing the budget proposal, President Biden stated that this additional funding would be intended to dispel certain rumors about white supremacy ideals among border agencies.

Under Biden’s proposal, there would be a 22% increase in funding for workforce oversight offices for fiscal year 2022 (October-September), for a total investment of $470 billion.

The Biden administration did not clarify what the specific reasons are or if there were any incidents within immigration agencies to request increased funding, but it has emphasized the need to control extremist ideals, including those related to white supremacy, to reduce discrimination and social division.

ICE and CBP also did not comment on President Biden’s request to supervise border agent practices. It is important to mention that these agencies are in charge of enforcing immigration law both at the borders and within the US, including deportation proceedings. Therefore, their stance must be neutral to avoid conflicts of interest and to comply with the government’s orders in accordance with local law.
