August: Border apprehension rates finally declined slightly

CBP (Customs and Border Protection), one of the entities in charge of enforcing immigration law in the border territory, recently released border apprehension figures from August and, to the surprise of many, they finally decreased slightly.

This agency, which is a branch of DHS (Department of Homeland Security), releases on a monthly basis the number of undocumented immigrants apprehended in the border territory, who try to enter the US without prior authorization. CBP usually divides border encounters among family units, single adults and unaccompanied minors.

In August, border forces reported a total of 208,887 encounters, a decrease of 2.8% compared to July, when border forces reported a total of 213,534 encounters. This figure would seem to be quite low, but it actually represents progress for the border situation and primarily for the Biden administration.

Important facts:

  • In March, CBP reported 173,281 border encounters and since then, the number gradually increased through July (3% in April, 0.99% in May, 4% in June and 12% in July). Thus, August is the first month in which border apprehension rates have decreased in a six-month period.
  • According to official figures, the number that decreased the most in August was that of single adults.
