Asylum seekers ask the Biden administration for help

About 1,500 asylum seekers are living in a temporary camp (in tents) in Tijuana’s Plaza Chaparral, in front of the San Ysidro port of entry, waiting for the opportunity to enter the US while trying to flee from truly precarious and risky situations such as persecution, violence, abuse, famine and war.

Many of them have had to wait in Mexican territory for several months or even more than a year to be able to present their cases at the US borders. This is mainly because policies of former President Donald Trump considerably narrowed alternatives available to the most vulnerable immigrant communities such as asylum seekers.

Adding to that, the sudden arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic almost completely paused immigration around the world for a considerable period of time and also increased delays in pending immigration cases in the US, including thousands of asylum applications.

Now that the health crisis is being gradually controlled and reduced thanks to the national vaccination project and taking into account that the US administration now has another leader, Joe Biden, hundreds of immigrants stranded in Mexico ask his government to allow them to request international protection in the country through political asylum.

They state that President Biden promised during his political campaign to improve conditions for asylum seekers and to provide assistance to those who need it the most. However, they state that the Biden administration’s recent message has been not to come to the US, which creates uncertainty among the most vulnerable immigrant populations.

The Biden administration’s actions regarding political asylum

The Biden administration has a fairly broad strategy when it comes to the immigration sector and the president has clarified on multiple occasions that his team plans to improve the local immigration system, but that it will require patience, time and understanding by immigrant communities.

In fact, the Biden administration has already taken multiple steps to revoke Trump’s restrictive policies on immigration and has sought to gradually restructure programs and alternatives available to foreigners, from communities in need of international assistance such as asylum seekers, to highly qualified workers and foreign students.

Speaking specifically about political asylum, President Biden has already rescinded the MPP (Migrant Protection Protocols) or “Remain in Mexico” policy. This rule stated that asylum seekers had to stay in Mexico until they received a response to their immigration cases, which left thousands of immigrants in limbo amid the health emergency.

Through a resettlement project, the Biden administration is only allowing asylum seekers who have active cases and who are in Mexico under the MPP policy to enter the US, at least for now. This is because health emergency restrictions must remain in place to prevent another massive outbreak of Coronavirus in the North American territory.

President Biden states that these emergency measures are only temporary and that his administration will carry out new strategies to begin processing political asylum cases at the borders again.
