Advocates Celebrate DHS Decision to Rescind the MPP Again

Advocates support termination of the MPP policy again

The Biden administration recently rescinded the MPP policy again

One of the Biden administration’s first actions in early 2021 was to suspend enrollment in the program called “Remain in Mexico” or MPP (Migrant Protection Protocols).

This policy, which was implemented by Trump in 2019, states that only asylum seekers who legitimately receive political asylum status may enter the US. Therefore, under this rule, asylum seekers must wait in Mexican territory until they receive a response to their immigration applications, which can take a considerable period of time.

In June 2021, Biden’s DHS (Department of Homeland Security) officially rescinded the MPP policy, stating that it was inefficient and inhumane.

However, in August, a Texas federal judge ordered the Biden administration to reimplement the MPP rule because, in his opinion, it did not follow regular protocols when terminating the policy. This ruling was later upheld by the Supreme Court.

In late October, Biden’s DHS issued a new memorandum rescinding the MPP policy again, but this time following the Texas judge’s comments regarding the correct process for permanently terminating it. Nevertheless, the future of this memo is still subject to pending litigation.

Advocates support termination of the MPP policy again

Several activist groups, including religious organizations, greatly support the decision by Biden’s DHS to rescind the MPP policy again.

For them, this is a major step towards restructuring the entire immigration system, especially when it comes to humanitarian programs that offer international protection to immigrant communities that need it most.

In fact, one of the social leaders of an immigrant rights advocacy group recently stated, “We are grateful that the administration is taking further steps to reverse this degrading and life-threatening policy”.
