Advertising Around the US Calls on ICE to Release Detained Families

Billboards in four states ask ICE to free immigrant families

ICE as the main border force

One of the main branches of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which has been an essential pillar in the development of the political ideal of Trump’s administration when it comes to immigration.

Some of ICE’s duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Protect the borders of the US.
  • Prevent mass illegal immigration.
  • Supervise merchandise entering the country.
  • Oversee immigration detention centers around the country.
  • Carry out operations to capture undocumented immigrants who managed to cross the borders without prior authorization.

Over the past three years, ICE’s growth has been exponential due to the Trump administration’s investment in hiring more staff and increasing border security to reduce illegal immigration, mainly from Central America.

One of the most controversial issues surrounding ICE’s work is the separation of immigrant families who arrive at the borders or who try to cross them without legal documentation.

To understand the situation, it is important to know that immigrant minors cannot, according to local law, be detained by border forces for more than 72 hours. Hence, they remain under the supervision of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), which is another branch of the DHS.

Due to immigration policies implemented and modified during the term of President Donald Trump, family separation has increased considerably at the US’ borders, attracting the attention of critics, immigration attorneys, activists and immigrant rights advocates.

Organization creates publicity asking ICE to release detained families

A non-profit organization named Amnesty International, which currently offers services in more than 150 countries and focuses primarily on defending human rights, recently launched an advertising campaign against the separation of immigrant families in the US.

The organization financed multiple billboards around the country calling on ICE to release immigrants separated from their families due to the Trump administration’s policies.

Billboards are currently located in:

  • Texas.
  • Pennsylvania.
  • Virginia.
  • Washington, DC.

The purpose of the organization is to draw the attention of ICE to act promptly and release immigrant minors, or to draw the attention of the population that is not aware of what is really happening with the immigration sector of the US.

In fact, one of the organization’s researchers declares: “It is very clear the government has doubled down. They are not going to release these children (…) These children are forgotten. Let’s give them a name and some space.”

Adding to that, multiple activists belonging to this organization declare that the Trump administration has substantially modified asylum process as part of a political ideal, which does not seek to protect the American population, but only plans to marginalize immigrants who need international protection, including minors.
