Refugee Admission Could Be Indefinitely Suspended by Trump Administration

Trump plans to postpone refugee cases until further notice

The Trump administration’s immigration policies

The immigration sector of the US has felt a strong impact in recent years due to policies implemented by the Trump administration, which does not completely agree with the immigration system that was previously established.

Nowadays, after more than three years since President Trump took office, his administration faces multiple legal processes and lawsuits due to increased restrictions on immigration processes.

To give a specific example, the political asylum and refugee processes have been tremendously modified during the term of President Trump. In the opinion of the current administration of the US, the majority of immigrants who apply for these types of programs take advantage of local benefits, community programs, pose a threat to the American population, and do not always pay mandatory annual taxes.

Consequently, requirements to apply for political asylum or refuge have increased considerably, as well as restrictions. In fact, the government normally announces what is the limit of refugee applications allowed in the country for every fiscal year (October-September) and the 2020 limit is 18,000, which is the lowest number since 1980.

This has caused dozens of activist organizations, immigrant communities, critics, immigration attorneys, and immigrant rights advocates to raise their voices and file legal complaints in multiple courts around the country against the Trump administration’s policies on the immigration sector.

The Trump administration plans to restrict the entry of refugees

Due to the fact that Trump’s administration is currently facing multiple lawsuits for its stance on the refugee process, it is planning to:

  • Suspend the entry of refugees indefinitely, at least until the legal complaint is resolved or until the US Supreme Court of Justice intervenes if no agreement is reached.
  • Reduce even more the number of refugee applications allowed annually.

Adding to that, it is important to remember that the next fiscal year is about to start and the Trump administration has not yet stated what the refugee limit will be for 2021.

The current administration also intends to implement new rules for refugees to apply for international protection in other countries instead of the US.
