Hundreds of Companies Affected by Work Visa Restrictions

Almost 308 companies affected by work visa restrictions

Trump’s administration decides to restrict work visas

It is well known that President Trump has tirelessly tried to reduce immigration in the US, both legal and illegal, during his term. Nowadays, with the advent of the global Coronavirus pandemic, restrictions on immigration have increased, and currently, even legal immigration has several limitations.

In fact, the Trump administration recently announced that the issuance of work visas is suspended until the end of the year. This decision has the intention of mitigating the impact of the pandemic on the economy and the local market.

In one of our most recent articles, we talk about restrictions implemented on work visas and some of the processes that are still viable despite recent changes in immigration policies.

The controversy sparked by this measure

President Trump argues that the temporary suspension of certain work visas may boost the local economy and gradually help overcome the economic crisis the country is going through.

This emergency measure aims to protect the available job positions so that only the local population can fill them and unemployment rate decreases.

However, despite the government’s attempt to help the local population, multiple critics around the country have branded this decision as “arbitrary” and argue that many local companies are being affected by a lack of skilled workforce.

For instance, a recent survey by the Japan External Trade Organization shows that approximately 308 companies based in the US have been significantly affected by restrictions on work visas.

It is important to clarify that in order for a local company (or foreign but based in the US) to request specialized foreign workers to the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS), it must meet certain eligibility requirements.

One of the main requirements is that local companies cannot request foreign workers without proving that there are no trained local personnel to fill the job position.

Hence, most companies that initiate a process to bring specialized foreign workers to the US is because they really need more trained personnel and their production could be negatively affected without the help of foreign workers.

Aside from that, multiple critics around the country argue that the competitiveness of the American market is constantly driven by foreign workers who bring innovative ideas, research, and entrepreneurship projects that help the socio-economic development of the country.

The possible repercussions of this measure

According to official figures, the market sectors that benefit the most from foreign labor are:

  • Technology.
  • Research.
  • Medicine.
  • Engineering.

Therefore, critics have stated that the country could be tremendously affected and limited due to current restrictions on work visas, especially the local industry sectors mentioned above.

In fact, the US Chamber of Commerce released an official statement, sharing its opinion on the presidential proclamation: “Putting up a ‘not welcome’ sign for engineers, executives, IT experts, doctors, nurses and other workers won’t help our country, it will hold us back”

It is important for the Trump government to analyze in depth the possible repercussions of this emergency measure before the local market feels the impact and the shortage of skilled workforce.
