Former Border Patrol Agent Comments on Misconceptions

Former Border Patrol agent debunks myths about immigration

Misconceptions about the border situation

Within any society, immigration has always been an issue that creates different opinions among citizens and also unleashes social controversy regarding how the local government should handle and approach this sector, especially in countries that attract many foreigners annually and where irregular immigration is also a constant topic. That is the case in the US.

The national debate related to immigration is completely normal and respectable, especially when it comes to immigrants residing in the US undocumented or those who try to cross the borders, sometimes from multiple countries, without prior authorization.

Nevertheless, from that controversy arises a gigantic problem that is linked to lack of information, misconceptions and political opinions. This is because, being an issue that constantly draws the attention of the American public, immigration is often the focus of political campaigns, as well as conjectures that are rarely verifiable or supported by reliable sources.

These misconceptions about immigration have increased even more since President Joe Biden took office in late January 2021, mainly because since then, the country has experienced a growing surge of illegal border crossings, fueling controversy.

Speaking specifically about misconceptions around immigration, in one of our most recent articles we talked about extensive research recently conducted, which reveals that, more often than not, misunderstanding immigration stems from misinformation and leads to a strict, extremist and arbitrary stance, which divides the local population and widens the gap between American citizens and immigrant communities.

Former Border Patrol agent debunks myths about immigration

In order to eradicate myths and misconceptions about immigration, a former Border Patrol agent is on a personal mission in border territory that separates the US from Mexico, where she is trying to explain to local communities that immigration can take place safely and, at the same time, that the country must enforce immigration law at the borders.

Former agent Jenn Budd is mainly focused on clarifying that asylum seekers are not people who seek to harm or threaten national security, but the fact that the local immigration system is not well structured forces them to enter the US without legal documentation to apply for international protection.

She openly states that, “You can actually have security on the border and also have a humane asylum (…) What we have over and over again is that we don’t have a robust asylum system”.
